Living in Adelaide, we all know just how hot summer days can be. And the last thing you want to find is your evaporative cooler not working. If you end up in this situation, there are some simple things you can do.

Evaporative cooler not working? These are 7 simple things you can check

Firstly, it’s important to have your evaporative air conditioner regularly serviced so that it performs efficiently and effectively. But if you find your evaporative cooler not working properly, here are some things you can check before you call a professional.

  1. Check that the power is on and the circuit breaker hasn’t been tripped.
  2. Check that the water supply to the unit is turned on.
  3. Check the time delay, as evaporative air conditioners can often take up to 10 minutes to start while the unit fills the tank with water or is pre-saturating the filter pads.
  4. Check that the pump is on.
  5. Check the fan to ensure it’s working, and that air is coming from the vents.
  6. Check that doors and/or windows in your home have been opened. Evaporative air conditioners won’t work if doors and/or windows are closed.
  7. If the weather is humid, the system may not perform at its ideal cooling level. If this is the case, turn the pump off and ensure that the vents are directing airflow across the ceiling and not towards the floor.

Signs your evaporative air conditioning needs a service

While some problems can be resolved yourself, all the below issues are signs that your evaporative cooling system is due for a service or needs a repair:

  • The evaporative air conditioner won’t turn on.
  • The cooler blows warm air.
  • There is a blank screen on the wall controller or keypad.
  • The evaporative air conditioner trips the safety switch or blows a fuse.
  • Water is continually leaking from the unit, or there is water running onto the roof.
  • There is a burning smell coming from the vents.
  • The unit is either very noisy or makes strange noises.
  • The fan isn’t blowing any air.
  • The evaporative cooler produces an unpleasant, musty smell.

If you’re experiencing any of these problems, it’s important to contact a licenced and experienced professional who will quickly determine the cause, and advise on any repairs that need to be carried out.

When was the last time you got your air con serviced?

Evaporative air conditioners should be serviced every one to two years. Leaving it longer runs the risk of a breakdown, quite possibly during one of Adelaide’s sweltering heatwaves.

Lowe’s Cooling have many years experience servicing and repairing evaporative air conditioners.
